France after the Second World War: Polish engineer Jan Bojarski, who forged identity papers during the occupation, is left without a valid identity of his own and cannot patent his inventions. For years he leads a double life, while Inspector Mattei closes in on the unknown counterfeiter. Based on the true story of Jan Bojarski.
