The voice that was once a key tool in his manipulations has deserted the aggressor. Life is ebbing from him—you can hear and see it—as he whispers his final confessions and moves through the rooms with unsteady steps. *The Minus Man*—that was the title of the bestseller that Heinz Sobota (1944–2017) from Burgenland wrote in the mid-1970s—while incarcerated in Marseille—about himself and his crimes, is now also the title of the documentary that Alban Bekic and Sladjana Krsteska have dedicated to the former pimp and violent criminal, but above all to the women he coerced, abused, and yet, in the end, was unable to break. It is a haunting world that *Der Minusmann*—the documentary—unfolds before us. Sobota, who began his career by attempting to kill his father, once again casts himself as a charismatic figure and relies on the impact of his rhetorical skills to showcase the wisdom he has gathered from the underworld, but his strategy only works to a limited extent. The filmmakers approach him with interest, but are anything but uncritical. Three of the women he exploited for his own purposes recount their experiences with him; only his current wife expresses unconditional understanding for him. Bekic and Krsteska, who accompanied Sobota over several years, forgo archival footage and wisely evoke the past solely through sound—via the narratives of those directly affected.
